Agree what must be protected
Identify the functions and design qualities that matter: customer flow, durability, accessibility, maintainability or a defining brand feature. Any alternative should be assessed against those requirements. Compliance and specialist performance requirements must be confirmed by the responsible professionals and cannot be traded away as optional extras.
Compare more than the purchase price
Discuss material options, simpler assemblies, standard hardware, fewer unique parts and installation approaches with the contractor and fabricator. Compare the effects on appearance, availability, maintenance and scope. A cheaper item may need additional labour or create a different interface, so consider the complete proposal.
Document the trade-offs
Ask for an itemized alternative showing what changes, what remains, and which costs or programme assumptions are affected. Record the accepted option in the relevant drawings and specifications. Do not assume a substitution produces a fixed saving until your contractor confirms project-specific pricing.
A fabrication-informed discussion
Tony helps evaluate design and fabrication alternatives with reputable contractors, keeping the original intent visible as budget decisions are made. Consultony does not promise a percentage saving or fixed final cost. Bring your current design, contractor pricing and the areas where the budget needs adjustment.
