Restaurant / café / Planning guide

Restaurant renovation costs: what to budget for

A restaurant budget starts with the space you have and the operation you want to run. A dining-room refresh and a shell unit needing a commercial kitchen are not comparable projects. Square footage is a starting point, not a complete scope.

What the square-footage range means

The calculator uses CAD $250–$500 per square foot as a casual-dining construction benchmark from GTA General Contractors’ 2025 guide. It is not a restaurant renovation quote. A simple café may cost less; premium dining, a shell unit or extensive kitchen work may cost more.

Define the kitchen and building-service scope first

Ask your contractor to identify kitchen, ventilation, fire protection, plumbing and electrical work alongside finishes and fixed millwork. The benchmark does not define a universal equipment package. Confirm what is included before adding equipment or specialist systems separately.

Keep separate allowances separate

Furniture, signage, licensing, specialist systems and kitchen equipment need itemized confirmation. Add them to the calculator only where they are not already included in construction. Land, rent, financing, opening inventory and business operations are outside the estimate.

From concept to comparable quotes

Start with a brief, site review and layout. Develop materials and custom details, identify approval requirements with qualified professionals, then ask contractors to price the same documented scope. Compare inclusions, exclusions and assumptions—not only totals.

Where a consultant contributes

Tony Spagnolo brings design and fabrication knowledge to planning, material choices, custom details and contractor conversations. Consultony works with reputable contractors to complete the work; construction responsibilities and final pricing belong in the agreed contractor scope.
